Holy thursday poetry explication Essay Example For Students
Holy thursday poetry explication Essay In each stanza, Blake reflects the various behaviors society exerts upon these deserted orphans. To begin, In, the first stanza, Blake begins his poem with, Is this a holy thing to see, In a rich and fruitful land, Babes reduced to misery, Fed with cold and rouses hand? Blake uses the lines, Is this a holy thing to see and Babes reduced to misery that indicates the homeless kids that attend these religious ceremonies are socially expected to appear perfect and happy even though emotionally, they are not satisfied. He introduces the country as a rich and fruitful land which suggests that country is immersed in wealth, but yet, there are many orphans living In poverty. He continues to state they are, Fed with cold usurious hand which Implies the institution Is only motivated by self-interest, hinted by the minimal care the children receive and the lack of love. Additionally, the lack of heat is literal and also symbolic of the warmth of love they will never feel. In the next stanza, Blake states, Is that trembling cry a song? We will write a custom essay on Holy thursday poetry explication specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Can it be a song of joy? This Is a rhetorical question. These orphans are socially pressured Into singing song of JOT, but when they begin to sing, It sounds like a trembling cry. The songs sung at this church are meant to be Joyful, but due to the emotional emptiness, he songs are heard as cries rather than cheers. Secondly, the poem continues, And so many children poor? It is a land of poverty! Blake is angered that there are countless children that live in poverty while most of the country is showered in wealth. He claims it should not be considered a fruitful and rich land, but rather a land of poverty. In the third stanza, And their sun does never shine. And their fields are bleak and bare, And their ways are filled with thorns: It is eternal winter there. Once again, Blake uses warmth as a literal and as a symbol by claiming the sun does never shine for the orphans. Therefore, the children will never feel the warmth of love, nor feel the comfort of the heat. Additionally, the bleak and bare fields are another symbol of wealth. In Dalton to the quotation, rich and fruitful land, this shows the while those who live in poverty struggle for those resources. The filled with thorns is an allusion to Jesus Chrisms suffering that were placed upon his head. Furthermore, The thorns in relation to the poor are the suffering they endure. Also, the eternal winter is another symbol for the warmth they lack. Lastly, the final stanza tells the reader that when finally the sun does shine and the rain does fall, it is sufficient for the children to survive, but it is not enough. The basic needs in the poem are depicted as sunlight, rain, and food. Even after receiving what they sought, they still lack the warmth and love that they were deprived of from the beginning hence the quotation, Babes should never hunger, Not poverty the mind appall. Blake fears that this generation will suffer and so will the next due to the lack of care they required. Holy Thursday written by William Blake is a 4-line Ballad that expresses an omniscient perspective since the poem begins with, Is this a holy thing to see which offers to a mans direct observations, which could be Blake himself. Like most narration Blake uses in his poems from Songs of Experience, he uses an impersonal narration. Impersonal narration is defined as an all-knowing narrator who is non- intrusive and does not add personal comments. Blake uses an aggressive and angered tone throughout the poem due to his rage of how the poorly the deprived are treated. He describes his surroundings with little detail, but uses certain words that are sufficient to illustrate an image for the reader, which is demonstrated throughout the poem. .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .postImageUrl , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:hover , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:visited , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:active { border:0!important; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:active , .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805 .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0fa86371377c79b495daed67a1b40805:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry Essay ThesisIn conclusion, the poem itself is in reference to the first Holy Thursday poem that Blake wrote which has a far more lively tone and seems to celebrate this rather hollow religious ceremony. William Blake was writing during a time of extreme poverty, a defined class system and through the backdrop of both the French and American revolutions. In this poem we see the orphaned and abandoned children participating in an organized religious event that holds little meaning to them. They are living in a country that is very rich, but affords them; the abandoned live with no remises of a better life. Expand or reword) They are in an institution that gives them n o love or comfort. They are fed very little, given poor living conditions and are given no luxuries. These orphans are attending a celebration and singing a song that is filled with hope and Joy, but truly it is nothing but empty words. In the end we see that the sun does shine, the crops do grow, but again for them nothing comes of it. For the poor children all they see is darkness, poverty and twisting thorns that represent the obstacles they face growing up in a state or church run home. This mom is trying to show us the reader what a bleak and hopeless future these lost and forgotten children have, and these children who are suppose to be the hope and future of a nation. Blake, himself, did not embrace or support organized religion, nor did he support the human fallout that resulted from the greed of the Industrial Revolution. People were getting rich off the backs of the poor and downtrodden, which these poor orphans were a part of. Blake believed that to parade them off to a enduring and the fact that no one cared or was even willing to step in and try to solve it, angered him further.

Lab Report Compound Pendulum in Different Medium Sample
Lab Report Compound Pendulum in Different Medium Paper Pendulum in different medium Rural Corselets Oasis Introduction An oscillating object is a mass that follows a pattern that causes the mass to return to its initial position after completing one complete oscillation in a constant certain amount of time. This experiment aims to show how the medium that a simple pendulum is traveling though affects the frequency of the pendulum. Research Question How does the medium that a simple pendulum is traveling though affect the frequency in the simple pendulum and how drastic is theta change? Hypothesis Based on what I know about traveling though different mediums the more optically denser medium will cause more resistance to the pendulum causing it to complete fewer cycles within one second then the less optically dense medium. Variables Controlled: * Length of string between the mass on the pendulum * Amount of medium * Height of pendulum * Degree the mass is lifted too * Mass of pendulums mamas * Weight of pendulums mamas * Start the time at the same time as dropping the mass * Contain only the medium being tested no other contents Independent: type of medium (air, water, classic coke, Faint, Sugar Water) We will write a custom essay sample on Lab Report Compound Pendulum in Different Medium specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Lab Report Compound Pendulum in Different Medium specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Lab Report Compound Pendulum in Different Medium specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Dependent: (T) Time taken for Pendulum to stop at PEE. Materials * Clamp XSL * Stand for clamp XSL * Simple pendulum with a mass of egg XSL * Water tight box of the clamp stand CACM long*2. CM wide* 1 LLC high XSL Protractor XSL * Stopwatch XSL * Material needed to record data XSL * Water 1897. Ml * Ethanol mall * Sun Flower Oil mall * Fruit syrup 632. Ml Method 1. First set up the experiment, this requires you to fill the water tight box you picked out earlier with enough liquid to submerge the pendulum completely, to set up the pendulum, and to put together the compound pendulum on the lamp that will fit well with the water tight box, make sure that the pendulum will be completely submerged, also remember to make sure the syrup water is 50% water and 50% syrup. 2. You will also need to be able to find the density of all of the liquids. This can be done by finding the weight of 100 ml of the liquid in a jar then subtracting the weight of the jar. . Then place the pendulum in front of you and use the protractor to find 135 degrees from the top of the pendulum to the length of the pendulum, while holding only the mass on the pendulum to a 135-degree angle with the retractor starting O at the top of the pendulum. 4. Once you have set that all up and are holding the mass at a 135-degree angle get the stopwatch ready. 5. Then at the same time drop the pendulum from that 135-degree mark and start the stopwatch (try to make sure you drop the pendulum and start the watch at the exact same time as it is crucial to a fair test). . Keep timing the pendulum till it reaches PEE, then stop the stopwatch and write down what you got. Then do it once more in this same medium. You may test this as many times as possible but at least two. 7. Once you have the times written down get the box of liquid and place the pendulum in the water submerging it under the liquid, once you are going to change the liquid be sure to have the box that will contain the liquid to be clean before changing liquids (doing Syrup Water and anything containing sugar before water and ethanol will help clean the pendulum). 8. Once again redo step 2 through 5 for the next three liquids. You may test this as many times as possible but at least three. Remember this is being done for four more different liquids, which can be Ethanol, Water, Oil or Syrup Water. Results Raw data of the Oscillations of a Simple Pendulum in Different Mediums Types of Mediums I Trial one (cycles per 30 seconds) I Trial two (cycles per 30 seconds) I Air | 30 | 30 | water | 25 | 30 | Ethanol | 29 | 27 | Sunflower oil | 16 | 12 | Syrup Water | 22 | 20 | The data in this chart was found in order to get a close to accurate amount of cycles during a period of 30 seconds. It is the raw data that was taken from the experiment. Frequency of the Oscillations of a Simple Pendulum in Different Mediums Types of Mediums I Trial one (cycles per second) (Hertz) I Trial two (cycles per second) (Hertz) I Air | 1. 000 | 1. 000 Water | 0. 833 | 1. 000 | Ethanol | 0. 967 | 0. 900 Sun flower oil | 0. 800 | 0. 600 | syrup water 10. 733 1 0. 667 | Using the raw data to transform it into Frequency so that I can find the answer to my Research question. Dividing the number of cycles by the time spent recording the number of cycles helps u to find this. The Average Frequency of the Oscillations of a Simple Pendulum in Different Mediums Types of Mediums I Average Frequency (cycles per second) I Air | 1. 000 | Water | 0. 916 | Ethanol | 0. 933 | Sun flower oil | 0. 700 | Syrup water | 0. 00 | By adding the two trials then dividing by two because there are two trials you are able to find the average frequency. These results should be as close to accurate as we where able to find with the time and equipment that was available to us. Although there was many things that confused us during the experiment like how in liquid the pendulum acted very different from in air. This graph shows the difference in frequency in the liquids according to the data collected from completing the experiment in respect to the density and it shows how the change in density affects the frequency. There was a huge difference in the amplitude of the liquids and the air because the liquid did start at the same place as air, but we encountered the liquids to have critical damping. Also the water helped to push the mass to start moving again when the energy had traveled though the liquid and reflected back to the mass. The density doesnt seem to match up to the results that might mean that the density doesnt directly affect the frequency. Reliability While conducting the experiment we encountered a massive problem because we constantly noticed that critical damping accord and the mass would barely eve. Although the likely hood that the frequency changed due to this is very low although the wavelength was greatly affected. This critical damping could be the fault of the mass hitting the side of the thin container. Conclusion According to the results we can conclude that the density of the liquid doesnt directly affect the frequency. We cannot conclude the highest density liquid will cause the frequency of the pendulum to decrease. This doesnt support my hypothesis that the higher density mediums will cause more resistance to the pendulum and cause it to have complete fewer cycles within one second. My hypothesis worked in the same way as when you try to walk though a layer of water it become very hard as the water is pushing you back causing a change in frequency, but according to the results that isnt correct because the density doesnt seem to change anything. Evaluation The overall method of the tests where not completely reliable this is because of the critical damping found when the mass traveled though the liquid. One explanation for this is that the mass while traveling though the thin box the mass hit the side of the case because there was almost no room for the mass to ravel though liquid. We tried to counter this effect, but because of the qualities found in water the mass was attracted to the side and would continue to follow this process. To make this a reliable experiment we would have to use different equipment such as the high-speed camera and most importantly a container that is thicker then such a tiny space. The energy is lost because it is put against additional friction from hitting the side of the container, therefore it is proven that in order to complete a fair test the most be a replacement of the container used to hold the different mediums. The tests might not be 100% the added medium because it will always be mixed maybe very little but still be mixed with another medium, this could affect the accuracy of the experiment. Also using more tests will also help in crease the accuracy because then you find a more accurate average answer. Other then that all of the variables where controlled correctly, but that did not take away from the fact that the test was unreliable because of the critical damping. That shouldnt affect the frequency too much because frequency will always be fixed but the hitting could make a slight difference in the frequency.

Trance Dance of the San
Trance Dance of the San The trance dance, which is still practiced by San communities in the Kalahari region, is an indigenous ritual by which a state of altered consciousness is achieved through rhythmic dancing and hyperventilation. It is used for healing sickness in individuals and healing negative aspects of the community as a whole. The trance dance experiences of San shaman are believed to be recorded by southern African rock art. à San Healing Trance Dances The San people of Botswana and Namibia were formerly known as Bushmen. They are descended from some of the oldest surviving lineages of modern humans. Their traditions and way of life may be preserved from ancient times. Today, many have been displaced from their native lands in the name of conservation, and they may be unable to practice their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The trance dance is a healing dance for individuals and the community as a whole. It is their most prominent religious practice, according to some sources. It can take several forms. Many adults, both men, and women become healers in San communities. In one form, the women of the community sit around the fire and clap and sing rhythmically while the healers dance. They sing medicine songs that they learn from their youth. The ritual continues all night long. The healers dance in counterpoint to the rhythm in single file. They may wear rattles attached to their legs. They dance themselves into an altered state, which often includes feeling a great deal of pain. They may scream in pain during the dance. Upon entering the altered consciousness through the dance, the shamans feel healing energy awaken in them, and they are careful to channel it to those who need healing. They do this by touching those who have sickness, sometimes generally on their torso, but also on body parts that are affected by the illness. This can take the form of the healer drawing the illness out of the person and then yelling to eject it into the air. The trance dance can also be used to draw away community ills such as anger and disputes. In other variations, drums may be used and offerings may be hung from nearby trees. San Rock Art and the Trance Dance The trance dance and healing rituals are believed to be depicted in paintings and carvings in caves and rock shelters in South Africa and Botswana. Some rock art shows women clapping and people dancing as in the trance dance ritual. They are also believed to depict rain dances, which also involved trance dancing, capturing a rain dance animal, kill it in the trance state and thus attract rain. San rock art often depicts Eland bulls, which is a symbol of curing and the trance dance according to Thomas Dowson inà à ââ¬Å"Reading Art, Writing History: Rock Art and Social Change in Southern Africa.â⬠The art also shows hybrids of humans and animals, which may be representations of healers in the trance dance.

Racial essentialism and Racial constructivism Term Paper
Racial essentialism and Racial constructivism - Term Paper Example Racial essentialism is a malady that affects the American population from pre-historic times to the modern world. The American population is largely divided into two races, which are the black Americans and the whites. The notions that hold the phenomenon of racial essentialism purport that some races are better than other races, a factor that mostly triggers war between the white and the black people in the United States. The genesis of the racial segregation can be traced to the colonial times when the whites used to enslave Africans in their plantations as workers. The deep-rooted racism has not waned since most whites and blacks have been enemies in all spheres of life. America has been experiencing a subtle war between the two races for the longest period. There have been different cases of assassination of white people by black police or black people by white police. The underlying reason that propagates such atrocities is racial essentialism's notions. The most striking notion that propels such outrageous acts is that whites feel more superior to the blacks. On the other hand, blacks are vengeful since they believe that they are as superior as the whites in terms of intelligence, physical attributes, and work productivity and so they deserve equal treatment. The war that transpires between the two races occasionally is akin to a battle for race superiority. Thus, the reason is still coalesced into the notion of race or skin color. The war against racial prejudice in America.

Futile Search for Answers in Slaughterhouse Five :: Slaughterhouse-Five Essays
Futile Search for Answers in Slaughterhouse Five The book, Slaughter House-Five, written by Kurt Vonnegut, is based on the main character named Billy Pilgrim who is a little "lost" in the head. Billy is always traveling to different parts of his life and rarely in the present state. Throughout the book Billy mainly travels back and forth to three big times in his life. In each different time period of Billy's life he is in a different place; his present state is in a town called Illium and his "travels" are to Dresden and Tralfamadore. When Billy is in Illium he is suppose to have a "normal" life; he is married, has two children, and works as an optometrist. Then Billy travels back to Dresden where he was stationed in the last years of WWII and witnessed the horrible bombing. When Billy travels to Tralfamadore he is in an "imaginary" state, everything that happens to him is more like a dream. Through Billy's travels in time he shows that he is striving to find meaning in the events that happened in his life that he is a fraid to acknowledge. As Billy says himself, "All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist," (1) this just proves even further that fact that Billy cannot ever forget any event in his life. The main event that leads Billy to all his confusion is the time he spent in Dresden and witnessed the fire-bombings that constantly pop in his head along with pictures of all the innocent people Billy saw that fled to Dresden the "safe spot" from the war before the bombing. When Billy sees the faces of the innocent children it represents his fear of the situation. Billy can't acknowledge the fact that they were innocent and they were killed by Americans, Americans soldiers just like himself. The biggest issue Billy cannot come to grasp with is why the bombings took place. That question has no answer; it's just something that happened that Billy couldn't get over. During all Billy's travels back to Dresden he couldn't change what had really happened there although that was the closure he was looking for. Dresden purely represents Bill's past and fears of the truth about what happened.

Violence, Gender and Elder Abuse
Women and Violence Professor Guelakis November 1, 2010 Violence, Gender, and Elder Abuse Elderly abuse has not been researched enough. There has been recent expansion on the research of abuse of the elderly. However, it is still lacking adequate theory because there has not been enough research done, data collected on why it happens, or the characteristics of the abuser and victim. Women are predominantly the victims of elder abuse and men the abusers. However, there has not been a firm definition of what elderly abuse is. Some experts suggest that elder abuse should be included in the definition of domestic abuse.Experts have found in their studies that women are the majority of the physically abused where men were the larger average of elderly individuals who were neglected. However, many experts also state that focusing on the definition of elder abuse is counterproductive in focusing on the issue that women are the majority of abused victims. Feminist theorists have failed to pro duce enough data here, although they have the expertise to contribute to this research. One of the main problems with elder abuse is the failure to acknowledge it as a form of real abuse. The ââ¬Ëcaregiverââ¬â¢ is already excused by be given this label as the ââ¬Ëcarerââ¬â¢. There is also the focus on the elder individual as the catalyst to the abuse, by pushing the carer to his or her limits. The elder individual is seen as overly dependent and adding stressors to the caregiver. ââ¬ËGranny-batteringââ¬â¢, as elderly abuse was once called, has turned into a closer look at the perpetrator and his characteristics instead of the victims. Experts say that more attention should be placed on the predisposing factors, such as drugs, alcohol, and dependency.Spouse and child abuse research has been found to have similar pathological characteristics to elder abuse. Social norms support elder abuse against women in that women are dependent on caregivers financially, practicall y, and emotionally. There is little information, however, on the strategies, tactics, or coping skills because the victims have not been heard. Unfortunately, the lack of research, along with the ââ¬Å"denial and inabilityâ⬠to recognize elder abuse has made it difficult to gain knowledge and accomplishment with this very valid form of abuse.

Pillow Method Paper - 1354 Words
Pillow Method Paper The pillow method is a five-step process used to resolve a disagreement or enable two people to gain understanding from a disagreement. The process involves each individual to look at the problem through five different perspectives. Switching perspectives, I can see my coworkerââ¬â¢s point on how introducing new gun laws can lead to a slippery slope. There is always the chance that the enforcement of new gun laws could not have a significant affect on the rate of gun-related deaths in our country. This also could lead to tougher laws being put in place until we reach the point were guns are banned all together. Romes Construction Of The Amphitheater - 1404 Words
Amphitheater. Romeââ¬â¢s construction of the amphitheater, began in the Second century AD (Figure 3; Matova and Aliaj, 2006:280; Ponce de Leon, 2013:3; UNESCO, 2004:34. The arena and Roman baths built during this period were centrally located within the city (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:571; Bowes et al., 2003:382; Karaiskaj, 2004:13; UNESCO, 2004:34). Local topography played a part in deciding where the stadium would be built. Roman engineers made use of a hillside on the northern part of the arena, whereas the southern half of the auditorium was on lower ground. Roman vaults and piers held up this section of the amphitheater (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:571; Bowes et al., 2003:382; Matova and Aliaj, 2006:280). The southern, or lower side ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is believed that this amphitheater was able to hold 15,000-20,000 spectators, indicating Dyrrachiumââ¬â¢s population to be approximately 30,000 during Roman rule (Matova and Aliaj, 2006:280; Molla, 2014:31; Ponce de Leon, 2013:3; Puka and Beshiri, 2011:6; UNESCO, 2004:34) After Romeââ¬â¢s decline in 378 AD (Wilkes, 1992:265), parts of the amphitheater were restructured and used as chapels. The main sanctuary was built into the alcove, which originally housed the pulvinar (elevated imperial box) and vomitorium. Byzantine mosaics and frescos indicate that these chapels were created during the fifth century AD (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:574-575; Isufi, 2006:11; Jacques, 1995:154; Karaiskaj, 2004:13; UNESCO, 2004:35-37). A second chapel and possible third were built on the north side of the stadium (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:574; Bowes et al., 2003:392). Sometime during the seventh century, the arena began to be used as a graveyard, known as the necropolis. There are also several Byzantine art forms, dating from the ninth through eleventh centuries (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:581; Bowes et al., 2003:391-392; Jacques, 1995:154-155; UNESCO, 2004:36-37). At some point during the Middle Ages, the cemetery ceased to be used by the inhabitants of Dyrrachiu m (Bowes and Mitchell, 2009:574; Bowes et al., 2003:388-389). The last known

Culture has been used to signify the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢pattern of life within a community-the regularly recurring activities and material and social arrangementsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ of a specific group. A tribe consists of a unity of people by ties of descent from a common ancestor, community of customs and traditions or adherence to the same leaders. There are two types of labels that can be given to a tribe. One of them is the mosaic view, which consists of small-scale of tribes located mainly in the tropical world, and these make up a type of mosaic cultures. This means in essence that every culture is very unique and has to be studied differently, hence mosaic (every part is different not common). The second view is the ladder type. This is madeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However some tribes, for example The Mojave Indian Tribe prefer to trade surplus crops with coastal tribes for goods that they see as valuables, for instance; shells. Usually a tribe sometimes specializes in making an object or resource in surplus, other tribes who do not produce or have the skill to make it will be willing to trade for their surplus. Peasants are not exactly a class, as a peasant can be the owner of the land, whilst other serve land lords under their command of the land. Peasants are subsistence, which means that they produce enough to supply their own family. They are self- contained. They also thrive to produce surplus or produce cash-crops/specialised products to supply to outside economy (markets) as well. Therefore, contribute economically as producers and consumers into wider economic systems. One may take the Pottery production in Amatenango, Mexico; this pottery industry is only available in one region therefore nearly every person in the village produces pottery to supply the regions and its economy is based on the production itself. Another factor that must be taken into consideration when studying social relations is when a society goes beyond kinship relations in order to reinforce their status and maintain prestige of the kin. Financial Instruments for Disclosures â⬠Free Samples to Students
Question: Discuss about the Financial Instruments for Disclosures. Answer: Introduction: There are two matters in which the change in accounting policy and disclosure requirements has been listed. One is change in the method of accounting of cash flow hedges and the other one is the loss of data from the non current asset register. These two are interlinked in the sense that the hedge items are grouped under the head asset or liability depending upon the nature of the item (AASB, 2014). In the given case, there may be some items which may have been classified as noncurrent asset. The first disclosure that is advised is as follows: Specify the documents which have been destroyed. Specify the name and nature of the noncurrent assets that have been destroyed along with the quantum and amount. The reason for the loss of data shall be specified along with date of its occurrence. The second disclosure that is advised is as follows: The change in accounting policy regarding the hedge accounting shall be disclosed. As per International Financial Reporting Standard 7 and paragraph 23 it is stated that in case the profit or loss in cash flow hedges is recognized in the statement of the other comprehensive income then the following disclosures shall be made: The amount that was so recognized in the reporting period. The amount which is included in the statement of the profit and loss and removed from equity. The amount transferred from the equity and included in the initial measurement of hedge instruments (IFRS 7, 2013). The effect of changes so made in the financial statements of the company. Improving Cross Cultural Communication Skills â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Improving Cross Cultural Communication Skills. Answer: Introduction The word culture means a complicated accumulation of knowledge, folklore, language, rules, rituals, habits, lifestyles, attitudes, beliefs and customs that relates and gives a common uniqueness to a group of individuals. It takes a relatively long duration for a culture to develop. It is very common to find communications which seems to be meaningless to the receiver or the listener simply because either the communicator or the listener is unaware of what to expect out of the communication. Communication between individuals differ to a great extent between and within cultures and the various rules and regulations with reference to the accurate level of fierceness in interacting can lead to even greater misunderstandings in culture (Hilton 2003). The two words communication and culture has been repeatedly been defined and redefined by many researchers in the past simply because the two concepts are closely related to each other with what is fundamentally human. However from the anthropological view point, customs had united with all of its elements when human existence first came into being and led to the development of interpersonal relationships wherein various individuals ended up developing separate communities of their own which ultimately resulted in communication across cultures ((Kinsey 2011). One of the biggest hurdles to communication across cultures have been language, however the same has undergone drastic changes since globalisation and the advent of what we call telecommunication. The said concept is now being challenged by all by the spread of what is known as supra-English. Each culture have their own set of rules and regulations which is accepted by all its members automatically. Business entities across the globe have realised that intercultural interaction is very crucial, not only due to globalisation but also because the domestic labour has gone diverse both ethnically as well as culturally. Apart from cultural differences while communicating, it is very important to understand that the link that exist between the two communicating parties is also an important factor to be considered for successful communication(Moseley, 2009). The biggest issue is that even if the communication is being done with a positive attitude, miscommunication is probable to occur and that too when there exists cultural variations between the two ends. In the particular essay, communication across cultures is being discussed and demonstrated by providing various examples relating to ideas, attitudes and behavioural patterns. Four distinct variables are being discussed with regards the cross-cultural communication that occurs i.e. time and space, fate and personal responsibility, face and face saving and nonverbal communication. One of the most critical variable to be considered while discussing about the cross cultural communication is time as this is one thing that segregates culture and the ways the different cultures do things. Such as in the Western part of the world, time is inclined to be viewed as quantitative which is measured in units that shows the progression. In the West, time is construed to be equivalent to money and the said approach is termed as monochromic wherein focus is on a single communication at one time and not multiple. Whereas in contrast, in the Eastern side of the world, people are of the view that time is unlimited and hence do not value the same. People prefer to do multi-tasking at one point of time, thereby falling under the approach called polychromic. Thus people converse with many people at the same time and on various topics that have no linkage with each other. Thus here the cultural difference is highlighted between the east and the west (Padhi, 2016). One of the most sought after example to understand the Eastern part of world would be India. People here are of the view that time is endless via various cycles which keeps on moving, appearing and disappearing. Time here extends and elongates far beyond the human ego or lifetime. Further the dissimilarities over time can play out in excruciating and vivid ways in arbitration or clash resolution procedure. A perfect example of explaining the difference is an arbitration procedure with regards a land claim that occurred in Canada. First Nations people met the spokespersons from domestic, regional and national governments to meet each other and start the work. The former kind of people took a lot of time as they were talking about things which were away from the actual point of discussion such as the topic on which they talked about comprised of the spirit of land, what their people have done for the land and talked about generations after generations (Hooker, 2008). However, when the turn of the diplomats came, they talked to the point i.e. they showed various graphs and charts and discussed only about the purpose for which they had gathered. Thereby representing that the flow charts were linear and spare in their lack of description, starting from the overbearing customs from which these diplomats of the government came. Thus none of the two ends were happy meeting each other for the first time. They did not bother on the fact that they differed on time, rather were sure that they did not talk on the similar lines due to cultural differences, thus making communication uninteresting as well. Thus this made their interaction tough (Reynolds, Valentine, 2011). Hence it can be construed that the cultural advancements towards interaction does not necessarily always ensure good faith but also at times may cater to servicing of a number of motives. Emphasizing supremacy, dominance, benefit or direction over the path of arbitration may be a purpose enveloped up in particular cultural behaviours (Adair et.al.2001) . Culture as well as cultural beliefs can be utilised as a weapon by arbitrators, hence for the said purpose it is crucial for the interacting ends to be involved in collaborative-process design while catering to inflexible divergences (LeBaron, 2003). Since people from varying cultural backgrounds work in conjunction with each other to formulate a process to cater and deal with the problems that segregate them, they can query about various cultural preferences such as time and space and how it may have an impact on the arbitration or the conflict resolving procedure. Hence this way, they may immunize against the usage of culture as an approach or an apparatus to press forward supremacy (Ybema, Hynghae, 2009). The second crucial erratic elements which has an impact on the communication across cultures is fate and personal responsibility. It connotes to the extent one feels oneself as the master of life as against the level to which one views oneself as subject to things outside ones management. A second approach to this would be how much a person has the capability to adapt itself to the changes and contrive so as to be able to select the course of ones linkages and lives. Some have pinched a matching amid the importance on private accountability in North American surroundings and the background itself (Thomas, 1994). In North America there is a huge area which is sparsely populated. Here various kids grow up with a heroic logic of life wherein they possess huge ideas and hope filaments everlasting. Whenever they face any failures, they do not get discouraged, instead get up again and try until they achieve success. However in contradiction to the same, if places with a relatively smaller territory is considered wherein the history shows that the past has been too stressful full of struggles, at such territories the main stress is upon what luck has to play in the life of human beings. Such as in Mexico, the people view struggles and stress as an integral part of life which cannot be let go of or avoided. There way of reacting to breakdowns and disappointments is by reiterating ni modo which means that the disappointment was written in their luck and hence unavoidable (Earley, 2006). The cultural conflict in communication is important in this context. If a person is devoted in free determination crosses paths with somebody more defeatist in direction, miscommunication is surely to occur (Gudykunst, 2003). The same is because the former would demand for accountability and responsibility and unable to view the same may understand that the later is lazy or not honest with his work. However, the later would think that he would be respected and applauded for his efforts and if the same does not happen, may blame that the former was dominant and impertinent, overstated with his views with regards what can be possibly be achieved or reversed (Catana, 2014). The third variable with regards cross cultural communication is face and face-saving. Face is an integral part across varying cultural backgrounds but the dynamics of face and face-saving come out in a different way. The study with regards face and face saving with regards communication conflicts in cross cultural interaction is crucial especially in a diversified US work force and also in the wake of globalisation wherein people are generally found to be engaged into conflicts. Face is defined and is distinct in various manners in the literature of communication across varying cultures. As per Novinger, the said variable basically means the respect or viewpoint an individual has in the eyes of others and it connotes haughtiness or respect for ones own self. Whereas, some others have defined the same as the arbitrated image of the public, reciprocally approved one another by the contestants in interaction. If the said variable is defined in a more exaggerated manner then it would com prise of ideas of status, supremacy, courtesy, humbleness, within and outside linkages, humour and dignity. In various cultures and societies, maintain face is of utmost importance even if the methods and ways of doing the same may differ (Markus, Kitayama, 1991). The initiation point of egoism, eccentricity and communitarians are intimately linked to face. If one looks at oneself as an individual who is self influential by nature, then in this case face has to play an integral role with regards preservation of the image of the person in front of others as well as to self. For the same, the individual should make all efforts to imply adequate controls in such scenarios so as to attain the aims successfully. One may achieve this by adopting a aggressive attitude in arbitration or tackling somebody to whom one thinks has done an incorrect act to the self. One may be more at ease to stand in a situation of mediation wherein both the ends meet face to face and talk about the differences and resolve the same on the forefront (Oetzel et.al. 2001). Further if the main identification is understood as a member of a group, then contemplations about face takes into account the group as a whole. However, confronting somebody face to face may portray and reflect a very sad image of the person on the entire group to which he belongs and may even lead to disruption of the peace and harmony of the community as a whole. Thus face and face saving basically demands for avoidance of direct confrontation as it helps to safeguard the image and also preserve the relationships from getting damaged. Hence it simply means that their seems to be a thirst to save the face else shun from extending offense (Adler, 2003). Non verbal communication is the most crucial variable in cross cultural communication as language is a problem in cultural interaction which to an extent gets resolved due to the non-verbal part of it. Thereby whenever verbal form of interaction is not clear enough to comprehend, then the individual uses non-verbal method of interaction to exchange ideas. Nonverbal form of communication can be either via postur-es or sign language or emotional expression or touch or such other various forms. Cultures which belong to the low context such as the USA and Canada put relatively less amount of pressure on the non-verbal form. However one cannot conclude that non-verbal form of interaction is totally absent, but the same is less prevalent as people prefer to talk in words than in actions. Whereas in the high-context scenario in countries such as Japan, China or Columbia, it is easy to communicate in the non-verbal manner as their language is too difficult to comprehend thereby sign language etc helps in better communicating of the information (Okazaki, 2004). Some of the rudiments of the non-verbal communication are similar across various cultures. Such as the research confirms that emotions such as anger, happiness, surprise, sad are showed and articulated in the same manner irrespective of the culture to which a person belongs. Then the most pertinent question arises is as to where is the difference then. The issues come up with regards such emotions which are suitable to exhibit in various cultural settings and by whom. Such as it may be highly acceptable in places such as the USA to accept the loud behaviour of women expressing their emotion of terror rather than annoyance and for the male counterpart to exhibit fury but not horror. Furthermore, even the exhibition of fail expressions across various cultures is varying. Such as in China and Japan, people across the globe would think that facial expressions shown by them represent happiness but it may actually show anger or cover up sorrow. However, the disparities in the understanding may give way to disagreement or shoot up live clash. Such as if a Japanese is trying to tell the listener about the why he or she was not available at the time of negotiation since there was a mishap in the family, the same may be done with a smile, since their culture understanding is that it is inappropriate to impose in tenderness of sorrow on someone else. Hence for a westerner who is of the belief that a smile connotes happiness or joy, the said smile may look as incompatible and even rude during such a situation. Although there are some facial expressions which are same across various cultural backgrounds, even then the final understanding of these expressions linger around being culture specific. Thereby it is crucial to interpret certain things with regards cultural starting points and values so as to understand the sentiments being articulated across various cultural communications taking place (Pym, 2003). Another variable across cultures is related to proxemics or certain methods of linking to space. Across cultures one comes across varying ideas and views about well-bred space for communications and arbitrations, such as people belonging to North America are of the view that they need ample space since they are used to the same in their daily life in their houses as well. However in contrast, the Europeans prefer talking by maintaining least possible space since they are used to smaller personal space (Adetunji, Sze, 2012). The issue with regards space preferences is the the judgements attached with the space and not the fact that the space is present. Thus if a person is used to sitting close to someone while interacting and the other person tries to maintain space, then the former would interpret such a way of non-verbal communication as rudeness or unavailability of adequate interest to communicate. Whereas those who are used to communicate by maintaining a specific distance with the other person, then the latter in this case if coming close would be considered as discourteous and belligerent by nature. Hence it can be said that line-waiting activities and that which is present in a group setting such as a grocery shop are culturally prejudiced. As per the Americans, they prefer to maintain discipline by standing in line as they are of the view first come first serve whereas the people of France are used to breaking a line which connotes indiscipline behaviour at various places. Thereby these examples of disparities with regards the communication which is not verbal in nature are just the tip of the iceberg. Cautious annotations, in progress learning from a range of basis and humanizing associations across cultures will all help increase the enriching confidence to labour successfully with non-verbal communiqu differentiations (Koksal, 2011). Coclusion All the variables talked about in this essay i.e. time and space, face and face saving, personal responsibility and non-verbal communication are much more complicated than it seems so in the essay above. All these variables, individually have a stark persuade in the line of communication and may be accountable for clashes or the intensification of clashes when the conversation moves towards miscommunication or is being interpreted incorrectly. Thus in order to ensure that communications across cultures are being carried out in a silent and an amicable manner, the parties communicating should over a period of time should try to meet up in between, thereby trying to understand each others cultures and the values attached with the same. It is very important to understand that when two people interacting do not belong to the same cultural background, then they should understand what is correct as per the opposite culture and communicate in a manner which is not offensive to both the part ies. Thus the main key to cross0cultural interaction is basically trying to understand the other culture and respecting their values and beliefs as well. Bridging the gap is possible when both the ends move forward equally thereby ensuring to meet midway in order to ensure successful and meaning communication. Expressing high opinion for the traditions and the values apart from ones own is basically one of the best possible way in ensuring a successful development of cross cultural communication It this respect which helps in ultimately leading to a good and a healthy cross-cultural communication relationship. Animal Farm Essays (740 words) - Literature, Fiction, Politics
Animal Farm Annonymous George Orwell's novel Animal Farm does an excellent job of drawing parallels from the situation leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. Animal Farm is a satire that uses its characters to symbolize leaders of the Russian Revolution. The animals of Manor Farm, the setting of this novel, which symbolizes Russia, overthrow their human master after years of mistreatment. Led by the pigs, the farm animals continue to do their work, only with more pride, knowing that they are working for themselves, as opposed to working for their human master, Farmer Jones. Slowly over time the pigs gain power and take advantage of the other animals. They gain so much power that they become just as power hungry and corrupt as their human master. The theme in the novel being that in every society there are leaders who will, if given the chance, likely abuse their position. Old Major is a prize white boar who helps point out to the animals that no animal in England is free. He continues to tell the animals that the their labor is stolen by man, who benefits alone. The animals in return get near nothing, just enough to keep them away from starvation. Old Major gave many speeches to the farm animals about hope and the future. He is the main animal who got the rebellion started even though he died before it actually began. Old Major's role compares to Lenin and Marx whose ideas would spark the communist revolution. Lenin became the leader and teacher of the working class in Russia, and their determination to struggle against capitalism. Like Old Major, Lenin and Marx wrote essays and gave speeches to the working class poor. The working class in Russia, as compared with the barnyard animals in Animal Farm, were a laboring class of people that received low wages for their work. Old major tells the animals that the source of the problem is man, they must overthrow man to abolish tyranny and hunger. Soon Old Major does die, but his words still echo in the hearts of all the animals. With the leadership of the pigs, the smartest animals, they repel against the human and gain complete control of the farm. This would symbolize the Russian Revolution. Another parallel represented in the book is Farmer Jones. His character is similar to the politician Czar Nicholas who treated his people similar to how Farmer Jones treated his animals. The animal rebellion on the farm was started because Farmer Jones was a drunk who never took care of the animals. This made them very angry, fed by the words of Old Major the animals decided to rebel like the Russians. Czar Nicholas was a very weak man who treated his people similar to how Farmer Jones treated his animals. The Czar made his working class people very uneasy with the way he used his authority and preached all the time, and the people suffered and finally demanded reform by rebelling. The animal Napoleon can be compared as a character representing Stalin in Russia. Both were very mean looking, didn't talk very much but always got what they wanted through force. In one part of the book Napoleon had the dogs charge Snowball, another animal, as soon as he thought that the pigs were becoming corrupt. Stalin became the Soviet Leader after the death of Lenin. He was underestimated by his opponents who always became his victims, and he had one of the most ruthless, regimes in history. In was not till very many years later that the world found out about the many deaths that Stalin created in Russia during the Revolution. Another strong parrael would is the character of Snowball with the Russian leader Trotsky. Snowball was very enthusiastic and was a leader who organized the defense of the farm. He gave speeches and instructions but was not very beneficial. All the other animals liked him, but he was outsmarted by Napoleon. Trotsky and Stalin's relationship was very much like Snowball's and Napoleons. Trotsky organized the Red Army and gave speeches and everyone in Russia thought he would win power over Stalin. After Lenin's death Trotsky lost all his power to Stalin and was expelled from the communist party. George Orwell has created a masterpiece which is excellent if it is read without any prior knowledge to the situation in Russia. However the added element does wonders for this novel. Orwell is a genius and he has cleverly hidden the satire in such an excellent way, that everything fits into the picture like a
